The Mellotron is an instrument with history - just watch all the different companies that produced it over the years. Several different versions of the Mellotron were built. The Mellotron itself is not a real synthesizer, but a machine that stores sounds on tapes. You play it with a keyboard and every key has its own tape that has to be recorded individually. Somehow the Mellotron is like a giant tape recorder, but it has its own sound, the "Mellotron sound". Which Mellotron version Kitaro used is unknown. Probably an instrument made by Novatron.
